2011 AT THE END OF THE DAY…..Tribute to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday, Jan. 17 at Tamboo beginning at 5 p.m.
This 2011 event will feature special guest speaker, Prof. Vernon Domingo from Bridgewater State University as well as invested community stakeholders…The Greater Brockton Society of Poetry and the Arts, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority-Norfolk Plymouth Area Alumnae Chapter who will follow with a poetry “Open Mic.”
This event is open to the public and admission is Free.
Our special guest speaker, Professor Vernon Domingo will give a reflection on MLK & Nelson Mandela….Troublemakers for Justice. Prof. Domingo has a unique story to tell.
Professor Vernon Domingo is a professor of geography at Bridgewater State University. Professor Domingo was born in South Africa, where, under the apartheid system, he was classified as non-white or "coloured", having no vote or civil rights and earning 72% of what a white person would earn.
While he was a student at a “coloured” university, he was involved in a campus uprising, opposing the apartheid system of racism. He was expelled from the university in 1973 and blacklisted by the South African government.
In 1975 he left South Africa on a U.S. Fulbright scholarship to do graduate studies at Clark University in Worcester. He completed his doctorate in 1980. Since South Africa’s political liberation in 1994, he returns regularly to South Africa, researching the related issues of social inequality and unequal access to water.
Professor Domingo is interested in how the ideas of social justice crosses barriers and oceans and how Dr. King’s ideas of racial and economic justice influence and are influenced by movements in Africa, in Asia and around the world.
