Outrun Homelessness At Borderland, April 28

BROCKTON--Lace up your sneakers and get ready to run or walk with School on Wheels of Massachusetts at its Outrunning Homelessness Race & Fun Walk on April 28 at Borderland State Park in Easton.
There will be a 5K run and a 2 mile walk.
The event is open to people of all ages and abilities, including competitive runners, children, families, and teens. Individuals and teams are invited to participate.

Preregistration is $20. Registration on the day of the event is $25. Family walk registration is $75.
Registration on day of the event begins at 8 a.m.
The event will kick-off at 9 a.m. Borderland State Park in Easton.
There will be T-shirts for the first 100 runners who register on-line, prizes for each race category winner and refreshments.
Proceeds will benefit children experiencing homelessness in Brockton, Middleboro, New Bedford, Norwell, Quincy, and Stoughton.
The mission of School on Wheels Massachusetts is to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and one-on-one mentoring so children can reach their potential.
School on Wheels is also nearing the end of a "100 Families Challenge," a fundraising drive that asks families--100 or more--to donate $100 toward a $10,000.
If School on Wheels can collect $10,000 by April 30, the Weed Family has pledged to donate $10,000.

Library "Food For Fines" Week Until 4/14

BROCKTON--Help Brockton Public Library celebrate National Library Week with “Food For Fines” from Monday, April 9 through Saturday, April 14.
The library will waive your overdue fines in exchange for one nonperishable, unexpired, unopened food or personal care item per dollar owed.
No candy, gum, or soda. Pet food is accepted. Value of the item does not have to equal one dollar--for example, bring in three cans of tomato paste that you purchased for $1, and have $3 taken off your overdue fines.
Amnesty extends to overdue fines only if material is returned in good condition.
Amnesty does not extend to the following:
*materials received through inter-library loan;
fees for lost or missing items;
checks returned without sufficient funds; or
for lost card fees.
Patron must present the OCLN library card in order for library officials to access the library record.
All food and personal care items collected during this period will be donated to The Charity Guild local food pantry.
Library officials said library users can do a number of things all at the same time: clear up a library record, bring back long overdue materials, get rid of overdue fines, and help the community.

Fuller Celebrates Life Of Actor Paul Robeson

BROCKTON—The Fuller Craft Museum will host a special program, “A Night with Paul Robeson” to celebrate the life and career of pioneer actor, singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Robeson, who may be best known in the US for his rendition of “Old Man River” from the musical “Showboat,” will be remembered not only for his work in Hollywood and as a part of the famed Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, but also for his role as a civil rights leader on the world stage.
All are welcome and the event is free.
Fuller officials said April 9 marks Robeson’s 114th birthday and the Fuller Craft Museum, along with Indaba Theatre of New England and Berklee College of Music will celebrate his life and accomplishments with an evening of live music and drama.
The night will begin at 6 p.m. with a rendition of “Old Man River” and other classic Robeson songs for piano and voice performed by baritone Aaron Ray.
Ray’s performance will be followed at 7 p.m. with “The World is My Home, The Life of Paul Robeson,” a one man show performed by actor and comedian Stogie Kenyatta.
The Robeson commemoration will kick-off the first of Fuller’s monthly, Free Thursday Night performances in the artKitchen Café.
Due to upcoming renovations at the museum, the Fuller’s free admission day has been moved to Thursday nights from 5 to 9 p.m.
Since preparations began for renovations a few months ago, the Fuller had been closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As of April 3, the Fuller has reopened on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and returned to its usual schedule Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday nights are free from 5 to 9 p.m.

Medical Marijuana Group Meets In Brockton

BROCKTON--The Massachusetts Patient Advocacy Alliance will host an informational meeting at Brockton Public Library, Tuesday, April 3 at 6 p.m. about its legislative efforts to legalize the medical use of marijuana and protect doctors and patients from arrest.
The advocacy group supports House Bill 625 at the State Legislature which seeks to prevent the arrest and imprisonment of doctors and patients who may prescribe or use marijuana for medical use.

"Juke Box 1944" WWII Tribute Friday Night

BROCKTON--Brockton High School’s ballroom dancers will host their annual “Juke Box 1944” tribute to World War II veterans on Friday, March 30.
The dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 283 N. Quincy St.
There will be a buffet dinner from 7 to 9 p.m.
The Olde Kids on the Block band will provide ballroom music for young and old to step out on the dance floor and have some fun.
Semi-formal dress is required.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
Admission is free for World War II veterans, $25 for seniors and students in advance, $35 at the door, $40 for general admission in advance, $50 at the door.

Brown To Attend Youth Foundation Awards

BROCKTON--Brockton’s Promise Effective Education team will launch a new school attendance campaign, "Brockton 180: Get Schooled All Day, Every Day" with an event Thursday, March 22, from 4 to 7p.m. at Massasoit Conference Center, 770 Crescent St., Brockton.
Organizers said participants will learn more about the importance of attendance to a young student’s future.
There will be games and prizes for youth, along with networking opportunities for parents.
There will also be a free dinner.
At 4 p.m. there will be youth activities and at about 5:30 p.m., parents and community members are invited to join a special presentation on the role parents and others can play in this community effort.

Mendelssohn Concerts In Easton, Brockton

Free Dog & Cat Rabies Clinic March 31

BrocktonPost BROCKTON--The Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Mass., will hold its annual rabies clinic for dogs and cats Saturday, March 31 from 10 a.m. to Noon at the center's headquarters at 1300 W. Elm St., ext., Brockton. The cost is $10 per animal for rabies shots. Micro chipping w/registration: $25. All dogs are required to be leashed and muzzled if necessary. All cats are to be in carriers. Additionally, employees of the City's Elections Office will also be on hand to issue dog licenses. Licenses are: $20 for dogs that have not been spayed or neutered and $8 for those that have. *Proof of spay/neutering is required at time of licensing.

Maple Sugar Days @ Blue Hills This Weekend

BROCKTON--Brookwood Farm in Blue Hills Reservation will host its annual Maple Sugar Days Saturday and Sunday this weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Organizers urge participants to put on boots and a flannel shirt and head to Brookwood Farm for activities for all ages, a free ride on the Maple Express Trolley and of course, enjoy the smell of wood smoke as maple sugar is coaxed from the trees on the farm in the traditional way.
Cost is $6 for all. Children under 2 are free.
Brookwood Farm is located in the DCR Blue Hills reservation in Milton.
Take exit 3 (Houghton's Pond) off Route 93 and follow signs to Maple Sugar days parking.
This program is wheelchair accessible.

Mayor's Youth Summit, Sat. March 31--Register Now

BROCKTON--Registration is open for the 13th annual Mayor’s Youth Summit which will be held Saturday, March from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Middle School, 271 West St.
The event is open and free to all.
“The Youth Summit is an invaluable opportunity, not just for the young people taking part in the event, but for me as well--the chance to see issues from a youth perspective is a very important one when it comes to developing solutions for the whole city.  I encourage everyone to take part," Mayor Linda Balzotti said in a prepared statement. 
Community Connections of Brockton will also host the South Shore Parent Leadership Conference at West Middle School from 8:45 a.m. 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31st.

 In addition to participants, peer facilitators and adult volunteers are also needed.  
Peer Facilitators lead the youth-only break-out sessions.

This year’s summit is built on the idea that Brockton’s youth have the power to create a bright and secure future for themselves.  
The Youth Summit Planning Committee, made up of 17 students from the B.B. Russell School, has arranged programs that specifically illustrate the resources available to young people. 
The planning committee meets twice a week to plan the summit.
The theme of this year’s youth summit is “The Future is Ours.”  
Coinciding with the theme, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., attendees can get a thorough overview of higher education options and opportunities by participating in “Early High School 101 Workshop.” 
Led by Massachusetts Promise Fellow Ashley Lesperance, the workshop is aimed at students in grades 7-11. 
Lesperance currently serves with ACCESS, a Boston-based non-profit.  
Space for this workshop is limited to 100 people.  
Online pre-registration for this session will be available, but capped at 50 people.  Those interested in attending this workshop can also sign up at the summit.
Troy Juarez, Jr., of the Homeless by Choice Tour will be the key note speaker. 
Juarez will share his story of being a homeless teen at age 14 to becoming a college graduate and business owner.
Other activities include: a youth carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring DJ Pup Dawg of JAMN 94.5 FM, college and community resources, activities and giveaways; and breakout sessions.  
Free lunch will be provided.

Participants can register online or at any Brockton Public Library branch or Brockton Public Schools’ middle or high school front office. Registration forms will also be available at Trinity Catholic Academy, Cardinal Spellman High School, and Southeastern Regional Vocational-Technical High School.

Brockton agencies offering programs and services to youth are invited to participate in the youth carnival portion of the Youth Summit.

Haitians For Progress Gala, Saturday, April 28

Madea's Family Reunion Showing Friday NIght

BROCKTON--The Brockton Youth Council will host a movie night, Friday, March 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arnone Elementary School. 
The movie that will be shown is "Madea's Family Reunion," a hilarious comedy by Tyler Perry. The movie is rated PG-13. 
There is a $3 suggested donation to attend the movie night.
Proceeds from the event will go toward materials for the Uniting Teens in our Neighborhood Campaign – formerly known as the BYC’s anti-violence campaign.

African Festival At Brockton's Arnone Saturday

BROCKTON--The Arnone Elementary School will host the 14th annual African Arts Festivaland Marketplace Saturday, Feb 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be soul food, afro-carribean cuisine, live performances, storytelling, singing, and African drumming and dancing.
There will also be several films and a lecture focusing on blacks in films. Parts of the films may be graphic in nature and are geared toward teenagers and adults.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for under 12 and seniors.
The event is initiated by Indaba Theatre of New England, a Brockton based non-profit group whose mission is to inspire and uplift inner city youth.

Actress Cooper To Highlight Women Of Year Breakfast, Nominations Accepted Until Feb. 22

BROCKTON--The Brockton Commission on Women’s Issues is accepting nominations for the 2012 Women of the Year Awards until Feb. 22.
The woman being nominated must be age 16 or older, a Brockton resident, and someone who has made a significant contribution outside of her job to the Brockton community within the last year.   
Award recipients will be judged on their contributions made to residents of Brockton or to the city in general.
The commission is asking area residents and workers to nominate women who are unrecognized heroes of the city - the women who make a difference in the lives of the people of Brockton at work and outside of the office.   
Nomination forms are available on the city web site www.brockton.ma.us  
Nominations must be received by Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012. 
Please attach no more than a one page essay explaining why you are nominating this woman for an award.
No nomination will be accepted without a completed nomination form and attached essay.

Leone-Cooper is an actress who appeared in The Sopranos, a screenwriter, and an essayist published in The Boston Globe.
She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, actor Chris Cooper, and two rescue dogs.
The Jesse Cooper Foundation funds inclusion and adapted sports for children with special needs, and supports disabled orphans in Romania.

Jan. 23--New Hours For Fuller Craft Museum

Brockton—Brockton’s Fuller Craft Museum will soon begin a project that will expand the popular museum’s ability to offer programs and exhibits, however, the project will limit the museum’s hours until late spring when construction is expected to be complete.  
The changes are expected to minimize any inconvenience to members and the general public.
Starting January 23, the museum will be open:
Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Free admission will be Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. instead of Wednesdays.
Friday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
During construction, the café will be unavailable.
This project will add new collections, storage space, curatorial offices, and a new auditorium--along with other improvements which will allow the museum to offer exciting exhibits in the future and build momentum for a strong future as one of the nation's premiere destinations for contemporary crafts.

Borderland Hosts Winter Greens Hike Saturday

NORTH EASTON--Rangers and staff at Borderland State Park will host a Winter Greens Hike, Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Join DCR staff for a fun and frosty trek exploring the park's winter trees, shrubs, and groundcover--if they’re not covered by snow and so far it looks like it won't be.
Participants will hike through the forest, near wetlands, and along a field to learn about winter greens.
Weather and ground conditions will determine the route.
Meet at the Visitor Center for this hike.
The tour is geared for adults and children 8+.
Participants must dress for the weather and wear sturdy winter footwear.
Rain, snow, or icy trails will cancel.

MetroSouth Cuba Info Meeting, Jan. 31

BROCKTON--The Metro South Chamber of Commerce, with Chamber Explorations will host an information meeting to talk about the chamber's upcoming trip to Cuba, a country that until recently has been all but closed to American travel.

The chamber has been issued a specific license by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which authorizes registered guests of the program to visit Cuba legally.
Metro South Chamber will offer a 9-day trip to Cuba on May 3. The trip, departing from Miami, is priced at $3,399.

Brockton Library Holds "Name The Hawk" Contest

BROCKTON--Brockton Public Library is holding a "Name The Hawk" contest for residents, patrons, officials and all other members of the public to help give the visiting hawk a nickname.
New Director Elizabeth Marcus Wolfe said the hawk has been spotted countless times over the last few months visiting the surrounding area and especially roasting in a tree at the rear of the libray's parking lot on White Avenue.
Wolfe said she can often see the red-tailed hawk from the second-floor window of her office and patrons and employees are enjoying looking for its visits.
Anyone who has an idea for the hawk's name can fill out a suggestion form at the main circulation desk or children's department desk, or email Sandy Reed at sreed@cobma.us. The library will pick a winner on Tuesday, Jan. 17 after Martin Luther King Day.

Massasoit Celebrates MLK Monday

BROCKTON--Massasoit Community College will hold its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, Monday, January 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Buckley Performing Arts Center on the Brockton campus.
Admission is free and all are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
The guest speaker will be James M. Barrows, (pictured) associate director of community relations for Harvard University and member of the Massasoit Board of Trustees.
There will also be performances by the Mary E. Baker School Chorus and the Lyrical Ambition Magnificent Purity.

Upcoming: White Ribbon Night Gala to Benefit Penelope's Place

BROCKTON--Love Life Now Foundation for Penelope’s Place will host a White Ribbon Night Gala to benefit Brockton's Penelope Place Friday, Feb. 24 beginning at 7 p.m.
The event will be held at Boston's Phillips Old Colony House, the Windsor Room, 780 Morrissey Blvd.
Tickets are $40 with all proceeds benefitting Penelope's Place Domestic Violence Shelter in Brockton.

The White Ribbon Campaign was created by a handful of Canadian men in 1991 on the second anniversary of one man's massacre of 14 women in Montreal.
The campaign began as a way to urge men to speak out against violence against women. This gala will be an avenue to educate men about the ways they can be part of the solution in ending the violence against women, spread awareness against domestic violence as well as raise funds to support Penelope's Place Domestic Violence Shelter-Health Imperatives in Brockton.
With male awareness at the forefront of the evening, we are excited to have the following:
