Martin Luther King Day Events

BROCKTON—In observance of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 17, area organizations, colleges and churches will host several events on the weekend and on Monday.
Here is a round-up of those celebrations:
*Saturday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m. to Noon. Brockton Chapter of the NAACP will host the 25th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration. The event will be held at The Shaw's Center, 1 Lexington Ave., Brockton. Speakers include, Rev. Lehlohonolo H. Montjane, the minister of Pearl Street United Methodist Church in Brockton and Whitman. There will be food and breakfast. Cost is $30. Tickets available at the door.

*Sunday, Jan. 16 beginning at 1:15 p.m. Temple Beth Emunah to host award-winning film, “Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North." A Story From The Deep North was one of the few documentaries chosen from 953 submissions to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2008. It traces a journey by Katrina
Browne, the filmmaker, and nine of her cousins into the dark past of the slave trade which enriched their white New England family. Dain Perry, one of the nine cousins, and his wife, Constance, will screen the film and facilitate a conversation on race, reconciliation and healing. *Monday, Jan. 17 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Bridgewater State University. The 24th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Breakfast. The event will be held in the Flynn Dining Commons, Tillinghast Hall. Cost is $5 for adults, with children 12 and under admitted free.
This year's keynote speaker and Distinguished Service Award recipient is Roosevelt Smith, a partner in WeResource LLC.
The event will be followed by volunteer opportunities on campus, including the making of fleece blankets for local homeless shelters, brown bag lunches for a local soup kitchen, packages for U.S. troop serving overseas, and coloring books for children hospital. The university invites all breakfast attendees and members of the community at large to participate in these events.

*Monday Jan. 17 beginning at 2 p.m. Massasoit Community College's 9th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Buckley Performing Arts Center, Massasoit Community College, Brockton Campus, Brockton. Guest speaker will be Rahsaan D. Hall and there will be performances by the Mary E. Baker School Chorus and “One Objective” dance group. Admission is FREE, and all are invited to attend, light refreshments will be served. Call 508-588-9100 x1309 for more information.
