City Celebrates Irish Friday, March, 16


BROCKTON--The City of Brockton will host its annual Irish Heritage Day celebration at City Hall Plaza at 11 a.m. In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Irish Heritage Day will recognize the contributions of the Irish community to the City of Brockton.
The celebration will feature the raising of the Irish Flag and more.

Mardi Gras For Brockton Day Nursery, Sat., March 3

BROCKTON--The 6th annual Mardi Gras Madness to support Brockton Day Nursery will be held Sat., March 3 from 7 p.m. to Midnight at the Shaw's Center. 
Festivities include Creole food, traditional Mardi Gras King's Cake Dixieland jazz, and of course, Mardi Gras beads.  Casual attire.
Cost is $50 per person or $80 per couple. $450 corporate table of 10.
Proceeds to benefit the Brockton Day Nursery Scholarship Fund.

Blue Hills Winter Fest 2012

BROCKTON--Blue Hills Ski Area, Blue Hills Brewery and Friends of Blue Hills will host the 2012 Blue Hills Winter Fest Tuesday, February 28, from 5 to 8 p.m.at Blue Hills Ski area.
There will be Irish music, hot chili, and Blue Hills Brewery’s best beer.
Participants can also check out the slopes and ski or snowboard under the lights.
For those who prefer not to ski, but want to hit Blue Hills' trails, noted naturalist Matt ‘Twig’ Largess will lead a nighttime tour of the trails.
The event is free and open to all.

St. Pat's Mass, Saturday March 10

BrocktonPost BROCKTON--St. Patrick Church in Brockton will host its annual St. Patrick's Day Mass, Saturday, March 10 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The popular mass will be followed by a corned beef and cabbage dinner at Joe Angelo's Café. Entertainment will be provided by Peter Joy and The Council Chords--an ad-hoc music group made up of city councilors and offices. African Festival At Brockton's Arnone Saturday

BROCKTON--The Arnone Elementary School will host the 14th annual African Arts Festivaland Marketplace Saturday, Feb 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be soul food, afro-carribean cuisine, live performances, storytelling, singing, and African drumming and dancing.
There will also be several films and a lecture focusing on blacks in films. Parts of the films may be graphic in nature and are geared toward teenagers and adults.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for under 12 and seniors.
The event is initiated by Indaba Theatre of New England, a Brockton based non-profit group whose mission is to inspire and uplift inner city youth.
All are welcome to attend.

Actress Cooper To Highlight Women Of Year Breakfast, Nominations Accepted Until Feb. 22

BROCKTON--The Brockton Commission on Women’s Issues is accepting nominations for the 2012 Women of the Year Awards until Feb. 22.
The woman being nominated must be age 16 or older, a Brockton resident, and someone who has made a significant contribution outside of her job to the Brockton community within the last year.   
Award recipients will be judged on their contributions made to residents of Brockton or to the city in general.
The commission is asking area residents and workers to nominate women who are unrecognized heroes of the city - the women who make a difference in the lives of the people of Brockton at work and outside of the office.   
Nomination forms are available on the city web site www.brockton.ma.us  
Nominations must be received by Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012. 
Please attach no more than a one page essay explaining why you are nominating this woman for an award.
No nomination will be accepted without a completed nomination form and attached essay.   
Email nomination forms and essays are preferred.   
Send all nomination forms and essays to: womenscommission@cobma.us.The recipients of the 2012 Women of the Year Awards will be honored at the annual Women of the Year Award Breakfast Saturday, March 10th at the Shaw’s Center, Brockton.
Tickets are just $20 and are available at Brockton branches of Rockland Trust or through members of the Women's Commission.
This year's speaker is Marianne Leone-Cooper, author of "Knowing Jesse", an honest, humorous and surprisingly funny story about Leone-Cooper's son Jesse, who suffered with cerebal palsy.
Leone-Cooper is an actress who appeared in The Sopranos, a screenwriter, and an essayist published in The Boston Globe.
She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, actor Chris Cooper, and two rescue dogs.
The Jesse Cooper Foundation funds inclusion and adapted sports for children with special needs, and supports disabled orphans in Romania.
